About the "Tanabata" Festival

Tanabata (star festival) is a traditional Japanese event most commonly celebrated on July 7 each year. People write their wishes on a piece of colored paper called "tanzaku" and hang them on a bamboo branch. These branches are meant to guide the gods who descend upon the mortal world at Tanabata, and are decorated outside homes or in public places. Our current installation is inspired by these Tanabata decorations, and is adorned with tanzaku wishes written by guests.
