Environment Philosophy

Imperceptibly Sustainable

Since its opening in 1964, Hotel New Otani has taken proactive steps in harmonizing with the environment. The hotel has entered yet another phase in its history when the major remodeling of "The Main" building was completed in 2007. Prior to starting this milestone renovation, "Hybrid Hotel Project" was launched, with a goal set to combine "environmental friendliness" and "customer satisfaction".

By carrying out this project, earthquake resistance of the hotel building was enhanced to ensure safety of the guests. And while they enjoy luxury and comfort during their stay, they can be confident that every attention is paid throughout to lessen environmental burdens.

Wide windows offer a superb view while cutting heat and UV rays by 50% and saving air-conditioning energy consumption. Some of the guest rooms have a bath area from where the cityscape can be viewed day and night.

AEMS / Air Conditioning Energy Management System

Air Conditioning Energy Management System

The newly developed air-conditioning system AEMS enables guests to freely select the room temperature, humidity and air flow of their choice. The system is also highly effective in saving energy consumption by 22.7 % and reducing CO2 emissions by 28%.

Seismic Upgrade

Having undergone a major renovation, "The Main" building of Hotel New Otani is now robust to withstand an earthquake as massive as the Great Hanshin Earthquake that struck the Kansai area in 1995.

Heat emission of this system being considerably low, the synergy effect with the AEMS air-conditioning system reduces total energy consumption by 14.1% and CO2emissions by a significant 29.8%.

Red Rose Garden

Red Rose Garden

Designed by the world-renowned English florist Kenneth Turner, more than 2,000 bushes of red roses cover an area of 2,500m2. Initially for rooftop greening, now a romantic stage for wedding ceremonies.

Rooftop Greenery

An additional 2,800m2 of greenery has been created on the canopy of the main entrance and rooftops of "The Main". In addition to a pleasant view, the variety of trees differing in height, such as azaleas or bamboo grass, proves to be even more effective in reducing heat.

Biotope

Biotope

Part of the stream that flows from the waterfall to the Benkei Moat outside the hotel is a biotope. Mineral-rich pebbles and multi-purpose bio-soil constitute a well-balanced, pure surrounding, where fireflies are observed during some summers.

Wooden Tanks for Water Storage: Antibacterial Effects and High Durability

Wooden Tanks for Water Storage

70mm-thick American Cypress water tanks have been used to produce high-quality water for over four decades. The wood's unique antibacterial quality is effective in purifying the water.

Well Water Plant

Well Water Plant - An advanced treatment plant distilling well water for safe drinking water

At Hotel New Otani Tokyo, where rich water sources are available in the premises, an advanced treatment plant introduced in 2009 distills drinking water at a maximum rate of 350 tons per day. This water from the fresh-water generator is used as drinking water within some parts of the complex. This well is also designated as Chiyoda ward's emergency-cooperating reservoir and will be used to secure water in times of emergency. The well water plant's ability to distill 350 tons is equal to the amount of water where approximately 9,700 households can use for 3 days.

Water Recycling Plant

Water Recycling Plant

This plant produces 1,000 tons of recycled water daily from kitchen sewage water, which is utilized in gardens or staff lavatories. Since its installation, consumption of tap water has significantly reduced, and environmental damage reduced.

Compost Plant for 100% Recycling of Recyclable Food Resources

Compost Plant

Huge amount of raw refuse is produced every day from kitchens in the hotel, which are then carried to the compost plant for recycling. The compost produced is taken to farmers, and the hotel purchases the organically-grown vegetables from these farmers. Leading the hotel industry, the New Otani is a forerunner in establishing its original recycling system--producing organic vegetables and serving them to the New Otani guests.

Hot Water Supplier with Air-source Heat Pump, Recovering Exhaust Heat

Hot Water Supplier

Installed as the first in the industry, this facility achieves a remarkable CO2 reduction at a very low cost. Exhaust heat from mechanical rooms are also recycled for reuse, alleviating heat island phenomenon and fluorocarbon replaced by CO2 refrigerants for protection of the ozone layer.

These are only a few of the many examples of the "Hybrid Hotel Project" activities of Hotel New Otani Tokyo. The other group hotels, Makuhari and Osaka taking the lead among them, will follow suit promoting the concept and philosophy of;
